Bridget Barkan is a native New Yorker whose diverse talents have spanned from childhood to the present, making her a notable figure in the performing arts. Inspired by the electrifying performances of icons like Bette Midler, Whoopi Goldberg, Lily Tomlin, and Laurie Anderson, as well as the music of legends such as Joni Mitchell and Erykah Badu, Bridget’s artistic journey is marked by creativity and versatility.
As a singer, Bridget has toured the globe with the pop/glam band Scissor Sisters, electrifying audiences as they opened for Lady Gaga and collaborated with artists including Lily Allen. She has recorded with the legendary house DJ and producer Todd Terry and released her own albums and singles, showcasing her unique sound that spans multiple genres.
Embarking on her career as a child actress, Bridget made early appearances in commercials and on Sesame Street. Her film credits include significant roles in HBO's Everyday People, Sherrybaby alongside Maggie Gyllenhaal, Brian De Palma’s controversial film Redacted, and God's Pocket, where she acted alongside the unforgettable Philip Seymour Hoffman. Bridget also had a guest role in Steven Soderbergh's acclaimed series The Knick and became known for her recurring role as the one-legged hooker on Law & Order: SVU. Recently, she lent her voice to Misty Holloway in The Get Down, appeared in Blue Bloods and Blindspot, and is set to feature in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming film The Irishman.
On stage, Bridget has made her mark in numerous productions with the Manhattan Theatre Club, was part of the original cast of Dog Sees God, and took part in a workshop of the hit Broadway show Spring Awakening. Her participation in SHE; a choreoplay at HERE Arts NYC addresses crucial issues of sexual violence, showcasing her commitment to using her art for social impact.
In 2016, Bridget's one-woman musical comedy The Love Junkie won Best Show at the New York New Works Theatre Festival, while her subsequent show Dear Stranger, I Love You was successfully presented at the A.R.T Oberon in Cambridge and ran at The Peoples Improv Theater in 2018. Her performances are known for their genre-bending quality, blending song, character building, and storytelling into powerful experiences. Renowned for her vocal chameleon abilities, Bridget seamlessly navigates through jazz, soul, R&B, folk, electronic, and traditional musical theater styles, delivering performances that resonate deeply with audiences.
In addition to her solo work, Bridget performs regularly with the band Slow Nights, featuring members such as Del Marquis, Xavier, and Rod Thomas. She is also a familiar face among NYC artists, collaborating with talents like Lance Horne, Bright Light Bright Light, Lady Rizo, Murray Hill, and Joey Arias.
Bridget is proud to be part of the inaugural class of Pub Club, the Joe’s Pub Artist-in-Residence Program, where she further hones her craft and collaborates with fellow artists. As a teaching artist with Carnegie Hall's Music Connections, she is dedicated to nurturing creativity in others, particularly through innovative songwriting workshops and vocal coaching. Her commitment to community engagement manifests through her outreach efforts, including work with incarcerated youth and programs designed for public schools during the pandemic.
